Testimonials

“It’s very hard to find affordable apartments, especially working at minimum wage job.”

-Montgomery County Community College Student
“Neither my mom nor brother had a job at the time. So we went four months without both of them having a job, which was really hard. Me leaving was like a bigger struggle. But now, now I have something that is secure. Now, I have something that is going to be there.”

-Montgomery County Community College Student
“If you don’t have access to proper food, or you’re eating junk – or not eating – then you’re not going to focus. If you’re not eating at least something, then you’re not going to perform at your best.”
-Gwynedd Mercy University Student

“I feel like a lot of people are embarrassed to speak up that they need help. I like that there’s no judgment, that if you need something to eat while you’re on campus, you can go to the pantry. It helps with not feeling embarrassed or feeling like you’re alone and knowing that there are other kids out there struggling. It helps knowing that you’re not alone.”

“I have seen my grades go up because I had the energy to study.”

Student Stories

  • “Lisa,” a dedicated Nursing student at Gwynedd Mercy University, juggles
part-time work at a local hospital while raising her two children. For over a year, she has relied on RSN’s Food Access Program for bi-weekly groceries to help keep her family nourished.

In 2024, tragedy struck when Lisa’s sister passed away, leaving her with the responsibility of raising her three nieces and nephews in addition to her own children — all in her small two-bedroom apartment. Overnight, her household more than doubled, and the financial strain became overwhelming.

RSN stepped in immediately, providing multiple referrals for additional
resources and offering $500 a month for five months to help ensure she could cover her rent and stabilize her household.

While Lisa is still adjusting to her new reality, she takes comfort in knowing she is not alone. With the continued support of Gwynedd Mercy University and Resilient Students Network, she is determined to stay on track toward her nursing degree and provide a safe, stable home for all five children.

  • “Don,” a Montgomery County Community College student, was living in his car for over a year when RSN first met him in 2024. Despite the daily
challenges of homelessness, he never lost his determination — earning a
place on the Dean’s List every semester since starting college and building a reputation on campus as someone who radiates kindness and
    positivity.

When a loss of work hours put his car at risk, RSN stepped in with Emergency Assistance Funding to cover two months of payments, helping
him keep his only means of shelter and transportation. Don’s persistence
paid off when he secured a better job with more hours and higher pay.

Soon after, he found a roommate and, with help from RSN’s Affordable
Housing Scholarship to cover the security deposit, he moved into his first
    apartment in July 2024.

Now, Don is housed, healthy, and thriving — and in May 2025, he
graduated, a testament to his hard work, resilience, and the power of
    support to change a life.

  • “Rachel,” a work-study student at Montgomery County Community
College, is now in her third semester and excelling with a full course load.
Eight years ago, she and her family immigrated to the United States in
search of a better future, building a life together in a modest three-
    bedroom apartment.

Earlier this year, tragedy struck when Rachel’s parents were injured in a
car accident. Unable to work during their recovery, the family quickly fell behind on bills while also facing significant out-of-pocket medical expenses. Despite the stress and uncertainty, Rachel stayed committed to
her studies, balancing her academic responsibilities with supporting her family through an incredibly difficult time.

RSN stepped in with $2,500 to cover the family’s back rent, giving them
the breathing room they needed to focus on healing and regaining financial stability. Today, Rachel continues to excel in school, a testament to her strength, determination, and ability to persevere in the face of
    adversity.
